We fail not because we have chosen failure, but because we haven’t yet chosen success.
Nobody wants to fail in life and business. Yet, so many of us end up in very bad places and struggling to survive, let alone succeed. If we didn’t chose failure, then how is that we end up there?
The answer may be simpler than we realize. Failure is always the default. It’s not enough to avoid failure, we must actively choose and go after success. Anything other than choosing to succeed, however we measure it, is a vote for not succeeding.
There are countless books and articles out there about methods to set goals and create success. If we had to boil down all those books into the 5 principles that must be obeyed (according to human nature) in order to achieve our goals, we’d list them here. And tthe list may look something like this:
Set the goal
Most people don’t even get this far. What do you want? Can you see it with clarity? If you can’t see it, you cannot achieve it. Every great thing that humankind has done has started with an idea, or thought. Nothing we’ve created has spontaneously popped into existence.
A goal is not a goal until it is written down. In your mind, there are just thoughts. On paper, written, they become alive. While typing may work for some, I find actual handwriting works best. What flows through you sticks to you.
Read your goals every day. Too many people write them once and put them in a drawer. How are they supposed to empower you from a dark, dusty place? I personally re-write my goals every day. It allows me to see and feel each one and make any small corrections in my plan.
A great goal has clarity, assumption, and a deadline. “I want to be rich” is not a good goal. It’s not clear (what is rich?), not assumptive of being done already, and has no deadline. “I have earned $100,000 in my business by Dec 1, 2021” is a great goal. Your mind cannot work on generalities, so the more specific, the better.
Why do you want it?
Once you have the goal, it now must be energized. Is this goal something you truly want? Something you would die for? If not, go back to step 1. Your whys have to make you cry. Ask yourself if life would go on if you didn’t achieve your goal. If you glibly answer ‘yes’, go back to step 1.
Once you know your why, it’s time to let your why know. For example, if you must win for your kids, tell your kids exactly your goal and that you are doing it for them. Better yet, instead of pictures of your cat, post your goal on Facebook for everyone to see.
This level of accountability can only exist if you’re serious. Every time you look at your kids, you will remember why you won’t quit until the goal is hit. This is important in those tough times.
How will you get it?
Once you know what and why, the easiest part is figuring out how. As some level, there is always someone who has done what you wish to do. Find them, talk to them, read their book, and apply everything you’ve learned to a plan of action.
A plan of action is just that. It’s a simple, daily schedule that equates activity to results. For example, if you must make 5 sales per month and you must make 100 calls to get 5 sales (by the way, if your ratio is this low, we need to talk!) then you know exactly what to do to get the results you desire.
Should you miss the mark, make adjustments and apply them immediately. Be results-focused. If on the last day of the month you have 4 sales, don’t stop contacting buyers until you get the last sale. Set a minimum standard of excellence for yourself. Remember, your kids are counting on you!
Become the person worthy of achieving it
If there’s a second area where people fall down, it’s here. You’ll never out-achieve your self-esteem. In other words, if you want to earn a million dollars, you must first become a millionaire. Your outside world is always a reflection of your inside world.
You’re working hard on the outside, making calls, new contacts, building your widget. Are you putting as much effort into the inside game, who you are as a person? Make a list of three things about you that you love and three thing about you that you’d like to change. Read, listen, absorb all you can on all six things. It could be reading a half-hour in the morning or listening to an audiobook on the way to work.
Most importantly, drop all those things that don’t improve you or move you closer to you goal. TV, radio, social media, hanging with friends, will distract you if you let them. You will become exactly like the 5 people you hang around with respect to income, success, happiness, and health.
Take immediate and massive action
The moment your pen lifts from the paper after writing your goal, do something, not matter how small, to inch towards it. If your goal is to lose 30lbs by Oct., immediately go get a gym membership, hire a coach, or find a workout partner. Nothing leaves a goal more impotent than writing it and not backing it up with action.
After your immediate action, now it’s time to take massive action. Work your plan and throw every resource you can into it. Be 100% relentless in your activity and never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever quit. Too many people quit on the 99-yard line in life. It’s a shame that they pay the price and never get the reward.
Look, winning in life is hard. Then again, losing in life is hard too. Choose your hard. You can either achieve your goals and design the life you wish, or you will have to deal later on with the life you don’t want. Your family is counting on you, for if not you, then who?
The good news is that if we take our goals seriously, we’ll find that life becomes a process of constant improvement, unconditional happiness, and level of wealth in each aspect beyond our wildest dreams. It only takes the desire, will, and some action.
